What the Environment Means to Me!

1.

From a small child till now the environment has always been a part of my life. Being a farming family I have been taught that our environment around us can help us to provide the food we need. Summer is when I spend a big part of my time outside from things like boating on the lake to spending nights at the farm. My favourite days at the lake is when the sun’s shining, the winds down, and the water is just right. We spend family time relaxing, enjoying the sun, and swimming in the lake. Other times when I’m at home it’s harvest time so we spend the majority of our evening riding in combines and with dad to dump the truck. My sisters and I also like to go exploring around, this sometimes includes hunting for mice. This adventure can go horribly wrong when you find a skunk instead of mouse! In the winter when we have snow my sisters and I like to go outside and make snowmen and snow angels. Also from a young age i enjoy playing in the mud and water in the spring after the snow melts. Driving multiple time through the puddle by my house seeing how big of a splash you can make with the truck. I would say my environment would be mix of all seasons, I’ve learned to love something in every season. But if I had to choose my favourite I’d say summer because of all the things you can do. Also I love looking at how green the trees and grass are and how bright the summer flowers can blossom.

Anthropocentric is the belief that humans are the center and most important species on the planet.

Biocentric is a political and ethical point that all life deserves equal value.

Ecocentric is a political philosophy that has a nature-centered system of values rather than human centered.

Technocentric is a value system that is based around technology and how it can protect the environment.

Ecofeminist is a movement that connections domination of nature and exploitation of women.

I believe that I can relate mostly with biocentric beliefs because I believe all life has value. All life should have value because there are more than just one thing that make up the world around us. The world is not just made up of humans, technology, or nature. I have been taught that all these things come together to support the life we live today.

What’s Going on in Flint?

According to CNN report the govern of Genesee County, Michigan declared a state of emergency back on Tuesday January 26, 2016. The city of Flint changed their water supply from Lake Huron via Detroit to the Flint River back in the spring of 2015. This change of water supply was supposed to be ” temporary and cost cutting” until they were able to get their own supply from the Great Lakes. Flint residents have been on supply of this toxic water from about April, 2015. The level of lead went up times 10 from the piping through Flint, there was also complications before like the presence of E. Coli and TMH`s. After the switch of supply a local hospital noticed a double in the children’s lead level in their blood.  The victims of the contaminated water decided to file a class action lawsuit back in November against the state of Michigan. Health effects from the lead include skin lesions, hair loss, high levels of lead in the blood, vision loss, memory loss, depression and anxiety.

I think that the high levels of lead in the water will affect the ecosystems. It will affect them by if the people of Flint were watering their lawn or plants before knowing of the lead. High levels of lead can affect the growth and reproduction of plants and animals. These levels would also affect your house pets because it would most likely have the same effect as it does on humans. In the Flint river I wouldn’t think many aquatic life could live because of the lead or other toxins in the water like chlorine.
